We all want better for you makeup products and transparency from both brands and manufacturers. We know that there are so many different ways in which we can make products that aren’t so harmful to ourselves or the environment. Both Vegan and Cruelty free products are becoming more and more of an expectation from beauty lovers worldwide. If you don’t know already, it’s completely unnecessary for makeup products to be tested on animals, but it still happens. You may think if a makeup product is Vegan, meaning it’s free of all animal products, that it’s also Cruelty Free, not tested on animals, but that isn’t the case. To guarantee the makeup you are buying is completely cruelty free, make sure to look for the PETA approved icon.
Since 2013, animal testing for cosmetics and toiletries has been banned in countries across Europe. Beyond simply not testing the finished product on animals, there are also strict regulations that the usage of ingredients that have been tested on animals are also banned. This was a major win for those who have been pushing for cruelty-free PETA approved products. In fact, there are so many prominent companies that are embracing the ethical choice and have opted to go both vegan and cruelty-free themselves.
What are vegan or cruelty-free products?
You might not know this, but what makes something vegan and what makes it cruelty-free are two different things. People often interchange these two since they are commonly associated with each other. Keep in mind that the differences might vary from person to person since there is no FDA approved definition for these terms, but here are the common meanings that are given to the two:
How is a makeup product certified PETA approved?
There are two ways in which brands and companies can be certified by PETA: global animal test-free and global animal test-free and vegan. When we talk about global animal test-free, the company has made sure that worldwide, they and their suppliers have not conducted, allowed, or paid for any tests on animals for their formulations, ingredients or finished products. Alternatively, if they are certified global animal test-free and vegan, it means that in addition to not conducting or allowing animal testing, their entire product line does not include animal-derived ingredients. This is the ultimate certification because it means that it is completely vegan and cruelty-free.
So, as more consumers are migrating to vegan lifestyles and pushing for animal-friendly products, the beauty industry is only beginning to listen and translate into products. While the space is growing more and more on the daily, there are still a limited number of brands that are both Vegan and Cruelty Free.
